Janmashthami & Dahi Handi Celebration @MITVGS Pandharpur
“The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm, in India. Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana. Lord Krishna is known worldwide and celebrated as an incarnation of God Vishnu.”
On Friday, 19 of August 2022, the students of MITVGS Pandharpur, celebrated Janmashtami. The students of Pre-Primary came traditionally dressed as Radha & Krishna. A splendidly colorful program was organized by the children and staff of the school; where students presented songs and dance performances. An awareness on Janmashtmi, the mythological stories on Krishna, Radha, Kansh – through narration was presented to the children.
Dahi Handi is the most ancient joyful game played and celebrated amidst merriment. Young boys and girls formed teams, made human pyramids and attempted to reach or break the pot. As they did so, the staff and rest of the students cheered them on. The students were overjoyed when they broke the ‘Dahi Handi’ (pot of butter & curd) and danced to the tune of devotional songs to express their joy.
The event is based on the legend of Krishna stealing butter and other milk products as a baby. This holy occasion brings people together, thus signifying unity and faith.
